Do I Really Need a Stroller at Disney World? A Parent’s Honest Guide
Your child may not use a stroller at home. That doesn't necessarily mean they won't need one at Disney.
One of the most common questions parents ask before a Walt Disney World vacation is:
“Do we really need a stroller?”
Maybe your toddler hasn't used one in months.
Maybe your preschooler walks everywhere at home.
Maybe your child insists they're “too big for a stroller.”
And honestly? They might be.
But Disney World is a little different from a normal day at home.
You're walking farther. You're staying out longer. You're surrounded by crowds. There are exciting things happening everywhere. It's hot. There are snacks, rides, characters, parades, and possibly a very tired little person somewhere in the middle of all of it.
So let's talk about it honestly.
🚶 How Much Walking Are We Talking About?
This is probably the biggest factor parents underestimate.
A Disney day isn't just walking from the parking lot to the entrance.
You're walking to attractions, restaurants, bathrooms, character meets, shows, shops, transportation, and everything in between.
And sometimes you walk all the way across the park… only to realize your toddler desperately needs to go back to the other side.
Even if your child normally walks everywhere at home, a full Disney day can be a completely different experience.
Adults get tired.
Kids definitely get tired.
And tired toddlers aren't always known for making calm, rational decisions.
Enchanted Tip: Think about how much your child walks on an average day, then imagine doing significantly more of it while carrying a backpack, standing in lines, dealing with heat, and experiencing an enormous amount of stimulation.
That's when a stroller starts looking pretty good.
👶 Does Age Matter?
Absolutely—but age isn't the only thing to consider.
Babies and Young Toddlers
For babies and younger toddlers, a stroller is usually a necessity rather than a convenience.
You'll need somewhere for your child to sit, rest, nap, and get around comfortably throughout the day.
Toddlers and Preschoolers
This is the tricky age.
Your child may walk perfectly well.
They may even refuse the stroller at home.
But Disney can be a different story.
A stroller can provide a place to rest when those little legs finally give up, especially toward the end of the day.
Older Children
This is where it becomes more personal.
Some older children will happily walk all day.
Others may benefit from having a stroller available during particularly long park days.
Don't make the decision based solely on age.
Think about your child's stamina, personality, and how your family plans to spend the day.
😴 What About Naps?
This is one of the biggest reasons families who aren't normally stroller families end up wishing they had one.
Disney can completely disrupt your child's normal routine.
Maybe nap time is usually at 1:00.
At Disney, 1:00 might be the exact moment your family finally reaches an attraction you've been waiting an hour to experience.
Your child might fall asleep in the stroller while you're walking between attractions.
That can be incredibly valuable.
A stroller can give your child a familiar place to rest without necessarily ending your entire day.
Of course, some children need a quiet, dark room to sleep. In that case, heading back to your resort for a proper nap may be the better choice.
But for children who can nap on the go?
A stroller can be a lifesaver.
☀️ Don't Forget the Florida Heat
Heat changes the equation.
A child who can happily walk around your neighborhood for an hour may feel very differently after several hours in the Florida sun.
Add humidity, crowds, long waits, and excitement, and fatigue can sneak up quickly.
A stroller gives your child somewhere to sit and take a break.
And if you rent from Enchanted Gear Rentals, you can also add a stroller fan to help keep the little one more comfortable while you're exploring.
Our stroller rentals also include a rain cover, because Orlando weather has a habit of changing its mind.
🎢 What About the Crowds?
Disney can be overwhelming for little ones.
There are characters, music, rides, fireworks, crowds, bright lights, and people everywhere.
Sometimes a stroller gives a child a little personal space.
They can sit back, take a break from the crowds, have a snack, or simply watch everything happening around them.
For some children, the stroller becomes more than transportation.
It becomes their little safe zone in the middle of a very busy day.
🛒 “But My Child Doesn't Use a Stroller at Home.”
We hear this one a lot.
And that's completely understandable.
You may think:
“My child hasn't needed a stroller in forever. Why would I rent one for Disney?”
Because you're not planning for your child's normal Tuesday.
You're planning for a 10+ hour vacation day filled with walking, heat, crowds, stimulation, and excitement.
Your child doesn't have to use the stroller all day for it to be worth having.
They might walk for hours and then suddenly decide they're done.
And that's exactly when having a stroller available can save the day.
👨👩👧 What About Carrying Them?
You can.
Until you can't.
A toddler who weighs 30 or 40 pounds may not seem particularly heavy when you're carrying them for five minutes.
Now imagine carrying them for 30 minutes.
Or an hour.
While also carrying your park bag.
In the Florida heat.
After walking all day.
Suddenly that stroller doesn't seem so unnecessary.
Enchanted Tip: Don't plan your Disney day around how long you can carry your child. Plan around how long you realistically want to.
Your back will thank you.
🚼 What If We Only Use It Occasionally?
That's perfectly fine.
A stroller doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing decision.
Your child might walk most of the day and use the stroller only when:
- They're tired
- They need a nap
- You're walking long distances
- The weather is hot
- You're waiting for a parade
- It's late at night
- They're overwhelmed by the crowds
- You simply don't want to carry them anymore
That's still a successful stroller day.
🌟 So… Do You Really Need One?
Here's our honest answer:
Maybe.
If you're traveling with a baby or young toddler, we'd strongly recommend planning on having a stroller.
For preschoolers and older children, it depends much more on the child and your vacation style.
But here's something worth remembering:
It's usually easier to have a stroller and not need it than to desperately need one and not have it.
And you don't necessarily have to bring your stroller from home.
Renting can make sense for families who are flying, don't want to haul bulky gear through the airport, or simply want a stroller that's ready when they arrive.
✨ The Enchanted Rule
Don't ask:
“Is my child too old for a stroller?”
Ask:
“Is my child ready for a full Disney day without one?”
Those are two very different questions.
Disney World is an incredible experience for kids, but it can also be exhausting.
A stroller isn't admitting that your child is too little.
It's giving your family another option.
Walk when they want to walk.
Ride when their legs get tired.
Nap when they need to.
And keep enjoying the magic.
